Carolyn sits down with her back against a wall just outside of the Nexus place. She leans her head back against it and closes her eyes for a second.

"I think my life has just gotten a lot more complicated. I knew I should have taken the doctor's advice and gotten therapy."

"A crash, huh?" He eyes her a moment before resting his head against the wall behind him and closing his eyes. "Perfect."

Carolyn looks at him for a second then snorts.

"Hey I didn't crash the damned thing! Anyway, once I was well enough, I booked a flight on the first ship out... There was no way I could go back to being a docking pilot, who'd hire me? Nobody! So I've been roaming..."

"Roaming. And you found the Nexus?" He smiles and raises a hand to brush a stray wisp of hair off her face, then stops, and pulls it back. The hell are you doing?

Carolyn holds herself as still as possible when he reaches for her then draws his hand back. She's not afraid of him, hell she stood up to him plenty of times back on hell, she just... the way he looked at her before, as if he was disappointed that she was alive. She smiles to hide her were her thoughts are headed.

"I was going back home... thought maybe the nightmares wouldn't follow me. Yeah, go ahead laugh, it sounds crazy I know."

"Running from nightmares. Nothing to laugh about. I've done it enough. What kind of nightmares?"

Coward, coward, coward! Up the alley, a garbage can flies into a wall, and above them, the lighbulb of a streetlamp explodes.

Carolyn's eyes get HUGE when she spots a garbage can flying through the air then jumps when all of a sudden something above her explodes and the light goes out. She closes her eyes for a minute and takes a few deep breaths. 'Nothing to worry about in the dark...'

"Yeah... Wait, you run from nightmares?"

"I ran from nightmares. Past-tense. I can't run from the new ones."

Carolyn arches her brow. Her earlier fright almost forgotten.

"You better not consider seeing me a nightmare."

Grins. "It was...something like that. I saw..." Shakes his head, serious again. "Forget it."

Carolyn looks at him curiously for a second, she can barely even see him in the dark. She shakes her head and starts fumbling around in her bag for her bottle of water.

"Well, okay but just for the record, I'm only a nightmare if I don't get enough sleep." She says tryng to lighten the mood.

He grins again. "Or if you're stuck on a desert planet with an escaped con."

Carolyn smiles and finally grabs the bottle.

"It wasn't the escaped con that was so bad there... I'd have to say it was the flesh eating flying monsters, you I could deal with."

"Ah, yes. Those. A bit annoying weren't they?"

"Just a tad..."

She takes a sip of her water.

"I certainly won't be suggesting them as the newest pets..." She trails off and looks over at him. "I'm not keeping you from anything am I?"

He looks a little distraced. "Wha? No. No. Nothing to do around here anyway."

"Are you sure?" She shrugs, looks down and starts fiddling with her bottle. "I mean I don't want you to think you have to nurse-maid me."

He snaps beack to reality. "No...I want to be here. I...have a question for you."

"Well... as long as you don't want any credits cause I don't have many of them left. But go ahead ask."

"Why did you go back for me?" His eyes are serious, searching her own.

Carolyn takes a deep breath as she considers how to answer.

"Because, I wasn't going to just leave you out there to get eaten by those... things." She pauses and looks at him with a serious expression on her face. "When I said I'd die for them, you were included. The only reason I said I wouldn't die for you was to piss you off enough so you would keep moving."

His eyes narrow, and he concentrates, trying to use his new 'powers' to see if she's telling th truth. Nothing. Self-centered bastard. You actually thought it was possible?
"Didn't work did it?"

Carolyn furrows her brows then starts smiling.

"You're here, so I'd say it worked. Maybe not in the exact way I had intended, I could have done without the whole getting speared through the back part but... still you survived."

"Yeah, I survived. Whole lotta good that did." His voice is bitter. The ache in his chest starting anew.

Carolyn squares her shoulders than reaches out and places her hand on his shoulder when she notices the bitterness in his tone. If he yells at her she'll deal with it the same way she's been dealing with everything since she got out of the hospital.

"Hey... who's expecting you to be perfect and never make a single mistake? Couldn't this place be like a second or third or whatever chance for us all?"

His eyes flick to the hand on his shoulder, then back to her face.
"I should have been able to save you. Al of you."
